Our client was a long-serving employee of an international employer, with over ten years’ service at the business.

The client faced redundancy and had been presented with a low initial exit offer that did not reflect their length of service or the circumstances surrounding their departure. They had previously engaged another employment lawyer but were dissatisfied with the support they received and sought alternative advice. The client raised multiple concerns, including alleged discrimination linked to their sexual orientation, victimisation for speaking up about that treatment, and historic underpayment. The matter required careful handling to assess potential claims, manage risk, and achieve a resolution without exposing the client to unnecessary cost or prolonged uncertainty.

We began by taking the time to understand both the commercial context of the employer’s offer and the treatment the client had experienced. We provided clear advice on their legal rights and the potential value attached to those claims before entering into negotiations. Acting on a partner-led basis, we pursued a strategic course of open and without prejudice correspondence, applying pressure where appropriate while remaining focused on achieving a practical outcome. Our approach combined firm negotiation with clear, straight‑talking advice, enabling the client to make informed decisions at each stage. We kept the process proportionate and outcome-focused, with the aim of securing fair compensation and allowing the client to move on without resorting to litigation.

The strategy resulted in a prompt, agreed settlement that adequately compensated the client for their claims and avoided the ongoing cost and stress of formal proceedings. The total severance package increased tenfold compared to the employer’s initial offer. The employer covered our legal fees in a tax‑efficient manner for the client. We also secured an agreed reference and the release of the most restrictive covenants, allowing the client to pursue future roles within the same industry.

Anthony Purvis commented: “It was very satisfying to be part of this case and to support the client through a difficult situation. The difference between the starting position and the final outcome was significant, and it was rewarding to help the client secure a fair resolution.”
